President Obama is Going to Prison News Today 11 July 2015

President Obama is set to go to prison next week

The White House announced Friday that during a swing through Oklahoma, he'll travel to El Reno, a medium security federal correctional facility outside of Oklahoma City. It is the first time a sitting president has visited a federal prison, press secretary Josh Earnest said.
While there, Obama will meet with law enforcement officials, inmates, and conduct an interview with Vice for a documentary on the criminal justice system, he said.
The visit will cap off a week of focus on criminal justice reform, starting with a speech Tuesday at the NAACP's annual convention in Philadelphia where Obama will "outline the unfairness in much of our criminal justice system, highlight bipartisan ideas for reform, and lay out his own ideas to make our justice system fairer, smarter and more cost effective while keeping the American people safe and secure," Earnest said.
He declined to confirm a Washington Post report that Obama will likely commute the sentences of dozens of non-violent offenders next week, but gave reason to believe it may happen.
"The president has used his executive authority previously to commute the sentences of nonviolent offenders," he told reporters. "I certainly wouldn't rule out the possibility that he would use that kind of authority in the future."
