SBI error makes Kanpur woman richest in the world

Urmila Yadav, a resident of Kanpur's Vikas Nagar, received a shock of lifetime when she realized that her bank account, which held Rs 2000, showed a balance of Rs 95,71,16,98,647.14.

Yadav had opened a savings account at the State Bank of India (SBI) with Rs 2000. Soon after she had received message saying her account had been credited with Rs 9,99,999 and another one showing that Rs 9.97 lakh had been deducted leaving her balance back to Rs 2,000, reports the Hindustan Times.
A confused Yadav went to the bank to clarify the issue, but a greater shock was in order. Upon checking her account, Rs 95,71,16,98,647.14, popped up as her balance.

Turns out, the goof up was a result of a process undertaken to freeze her dormant account by the bank itself. Yadav's account was dormant for some time as she had not maintained the adequate balance required to keep it going, reports the Daily Star. As a part of the process, the bank credited a made up figure and then deducted it.

But this credit and debit to Yadav's account might not have been in line with the official procedures.

"Rules bar banks from crediting and debiting any sum without the consent of the account holder," HTreports Abhishek Gupta, a chartered accountant, saying.

But as for Yadav, all she wants is her Rs 2000 safe with the bank, and the bank has made sure she gets that.
